Abstract
The local management of burns is a controversial subject. Early surgical excision has been advocated in recent years. An approach, which represents a compromise between this and conservative methods is immediate skin abrasion. Through 1973 to 1984, dermabrasion was used for thermal injuries in 201 children admitted to our clinic. Although 57% of these patients had wounds deeper than second degree, only 8.9% of them required skin grafting. A retrospective cosmetic and functional evaluation showed no visible traces of injury in 62% of the cases. The advantages of this immediate management method are: early assessment of the extent and degree of the injury; limitation of infection and toxaemia; early wound healing or suitability for early grafting; early mobilization and minimization discomfort for the child.
