Abstract

Study of a Gallic word in the papyri. Greek βασκαύλα Latin bascauda ‘luxurious kitchenware of Breton origin‘ (var. uascauda, mascauda) may be associated with two papyrus words, βασκαύλης ‘large vessel‘ and βασκαύλιον; there is a plausible epigraphical parallel from Lydia, μασκαύλης. The etymon seems to be Celtic basc ‘wicker-work‘ > ‘woven basket’ with two suffixes, -auda and -aules. The Gallo-Latin type bascauda survives in French baschoue f., bachou m., whereas French and Provençal dialect forms like bachole, bachola f. derive from Greek βασκαύλης or its reconstucted Latin counterpar t *bascaula.
