Abstract
Abstract: It is shown that the problem of approximating the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a homogeneous membrane as well as that of approximating (in the sense of Chebyshev) a function by generalized rational functions can be treated as semi-infinite programming problems depending on a real parameter.
