Longitudinal data were collected over 18 months from Dutch-speaking children, twelve SLI and six NLA, aged 2;6 to 4;0. By SLI is meant here (p. 2) children with deficits in language development (an average delay of 3 months in comprehension and 14 months in production), but with normal nonverbal intelligence, an apparently normal medical history, native Dutch-speaking parents, and so on. That is, their problems cannot be explained by hearing disorders, overt neurological disorders, or social factors (pp.6, 93). Chapter 1 discusses these background points. Chapter 2 surveys very briefly several approaches to discourse. Chapter 3 reviews research on interaction between care-givers and SLI and NLA children, with reference to turn-taking, register and communicative functions. Chapter 4 and an appendix present the coding scheme (essentially speech acts and communication functions, such as request, encourage, affirm, deny, etc). Chapter 5 presents the research design: recording and coding procedures, selection criteria for the children, details of their individual age and medical history, and background linguistic information such as mean length of utterance. Chapters 6 and 7 present results and discussion. Other appendices present sample transcripts from two children, inter-observer reliability measures on the transcript analysis, and statistics on the differences found between the two groups of children and care-givers. Van Balkom found no significant differences between the groups in mean length of conversational sequence or in the number of commu- 9490 nicative functions used: the SLI children were active discourse participants. However, (a) they used significantly more nonverbal acts, and predominantly nonverbal initiations, in order to compensate for their linguistic deficiencies, and (b) their acts were mostly directed to their own activities. For these two reasons, the SLI children's acts had weaker coherence with the preceding discourse. The SLI care-givers also gradually adjusted their language to the children, by themselves using more nonverbal acts, in order to get their children's attention and to become more involved in their discourse. The study was carried out in the Netherlands and all data are in Dutch, with English translations of the examples in the main text. Given that the study is about discourse coherence, and that questions of utterance content and focus are important, some of the translations are very loose. For example, zo een heb je ook van oma gekregen (p.29) is translated as 'Grandmother gave you a similar toy', which makes changes both in the lexical content and in its sequence in the clause. A more literal translation would be 'One like that you also got from grandmother'. As this example shows, Dutch and English have rather different possibilities for information focus, but such syntactic features are not discussed.
