Abstract
Electrical stimulation of the utricle was performed on 24 adult cats. In spinal animals, coordinated eye movements upwards were released from the anteromedial and posterolateral regions, and downwards from the anterolateral and posteromedial regions. From a region situated between the antero- and the posterolateral regions, horizontal eye movements towards the ipsilateral side were released. In decerebrated animals, the eye movements were uncoordinated, and one muscle activated in each eye. In cats only anesthetized with ether, either coordinated or uncoordinated eye movements were observed, depending on the depth of anesthesia. Electrical stimulation was also performed on the saccule in 19 cats, and the released eye movements were studied. In spinal animals, coordinated eye movements upwards or downwards were released from the superior and the inferior saccular regions, respectively. In decerebrated animals the eye movements were uncoordinated, and one muscle of each eye was activated.
