Abstract

We have examined whether probes for the evolutionary conserved genes ZFY and SRY, involved in sex determination in mammals, hybridized to DNA from male and female turbot. Turbot DNA was also probed with an evolutionary conserved Bkm-related sequence to investigate whether GATA repeats are distributed differently in the male and female genome. The human ZFY and SRY derived probes hybridized to DNA fragments of identical sizes in both sexes, but the SRY probe detected a possible Pst I restriction fragment length polymorphism. The Bkm-related probe gave highly informative DNA fingerprints in turbot, but with no sex-specific fragments.
