Abstract
A method is proposed for estimating stock-recruitment using only trend in rate of exploitation together with data on natural mortality, Brody's growth parameter and catch statistics. The method is based on a published delay-difference population model. Simulation experiments were conducted to examine its feasibility where Ricker's deterministic reproduction model and its stochastic version were used as examples. The simulations showed that the errors in the parameter estimates of the model depended mainly on how much rates of exploitation deviated from the trend and that the errors were often acceptable for a quite wide range of variance in the rate of exploitation. The S-R relationship for the Far Eastern sardine was estimated using this method.
