Abstract

Hybridization is considered in the broad sense as a “heterospecific insemination”. Three types of questions arise from this definition: 1.(1) What kinds of products can be obtained with this mating system?According to the ploidy of the parental genetic input (haploid or diploid gametes, polyspermy, retention of polar bodies) and to the occurrence (or not) of karyogamy, several types of genomes, hybrid or parthenogenetic, may appear after such a practice.2.(2) How can the characteristics of these genomes be identified? The interest of morphological, physiological, biochemical and karyological criteria is described and discussed.3.(3) What is the practical interest of those hybrids for aquaculture?Three types of parameters are investigated: viability, growth characteristics, sexual maturation (sex ratio and fertility). Some possibilities for research are described, especially the production of monosex or polyploid hybrids, the genetic improvement of hybrids and the understanding of the mechanisms (especially the study of meiosis) responsible for fertility and sterility.
