Abstract
One of the most striking features of the last two decades in Latin America has been the emergence of different social movements, particularly the environmental movement. The central theme of this book is the analysis of these movements and their vision of development and democracy. The contents are made up of almost all the papers presented at the two day International Seminar and Workshops entitled Development, Democracy and the Environmental Social Movements in Latin America and Europe Theory and Praxis held in London in November 1991 under the aegis of the Institute of Latin American Studies ILAS London University and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development UNRISD. The Seminar was jointly organised and coordinated by Jutta Blauert and MaraPilar GarcaGuadilla.
