Six species of Dynamene occur in the northern hemisphere. Only two species exist outside this range, in Australia. The distribution of the various species in the NE Atlantic-Black Sea axis has been controversial due to the difficulty in the identification of the different species. This has led to inaccurate records of their distribution, ultimately generating uncertain or faulty assessments on the biodiversity of these habitats. An update and a clarification about the distribution of this genus is therefore in order. In this study, we describe the distribution of Dynamene species in the light of new records from the NE Atlantic Ocean and its associated islands, and the Mediterranean, Black and Red Seas, and from re-examination of museum and several authors’ personal collections. Based on these observations, we extend the northern and southern limits of D. bidentata (Adams); the western and southern limits of D. magnitorata Holdich; the northern, eastern and western limits of D. edwardsi (Lucas); and the eastern and western limits of D. bifida Torelli. The range of Dynamene tubicauda Holdich is extended, but is still only known from the eastern Mediterranean. We also clarify the synonymy of D. torelliae Holdich with D. bicolor (Rathke), and the occurrence of D. bicolor in the Black Sea. New distribution maps of the six Dynamene species are presented. An update and a clarification about the distribution of this genus is therefore in order. In this study, we describe the distribution of Dynamene species in the light of new records from the NE Atlantic Ocean and its associated islands, and the Mediterranean, Black and Red Seas, and from re-examination of museum and several authors’ personal collections. Based on these observations, we extend the northern and southern limits of D. bidentata (Adams); the western and southern limits of D. magnitorata Holdich; the northern, eastern and western limits of D. edwardsi (Lucas); and the eastern and western limits of D. bifida Torelli. The range of Dynamene tubicauda Holdich is extended, but is still only known from the eastern Mediterranean. We also clarify the synonymy of D. torelliae Holdich with D. bicolor (Rathke), and the occurrence of D. bicolor in the Black Sea. New distribution maps of the six Dynamene species are presented. Six species of Dynamene occur in the northern hemisphere. Only two species exist outside this range, in Australia. The distribution of the various species in the NE Atlantic-Black Sea axis has been controversial due to the difficulty in the identification of the different species. This has led to inaccurate records of their distribution, ultimately generating uncertain or faulty assessments on the biodiversity of these habitats. An update and a clarification about the distribution of this genus is therefore in order. In this study, we describe the distribution of Dynamene species in the light of new records from the NE Atlantic Ocean and its associated islands, and the Mediterranean, Black and Red Seas, and from re-examination of museum and several authors’ personal collections. Based on these observations, we extend the northern and southern limits of D. bidentata (Adams); the western and southern limits of D. magnitorata Holdich; the northern, eastern and western limits of D. edwardsi (Lucas); and the eastern and western limits of D. bifida Torelli. The range of Dynamene tubicauda Holdich is extended, but is still only known from the eastern Mediterranean. We also clarify the synonymy of D. torelliae Holdich with D. bicolor (Rathke), and the occurrence of D. bicolor in the Black Sea. New distribution maps of the six Dynamene species are presented. Illustrated keys to the adult males and females of the northern hemisphere species are provided.<br /> {{Corps article/Fin}}<br /> ==Résumé==<br /> {{Corps article/Début}}<br /> Les isopodes sphaeromatidés, tels que ''Dynamene'', sont des animaux communs et abondants de la faune invertébrée des substrats littoraux et sublittoraux peu profonds. Six espèces de Dynamene sont présentes dans l'hémisphère nord. Seules deux espèces existent en dehors de cette aire de répartition, en Australie. La distribution des différentes espèces dans l'axe Atlantique Nord-Est vers la Mer Noire a fait l'objet de controverses en raison de la difficulté d'identifier les différentes espèces. Ceci a conduit à des données de distribution inexactes, engendrant des évaluations incertaines, voire erronées, de la biodiversité de ces habitats. Une mise à jour et une clarification de la distribution de ce genre sont donc nécessaires. L'aire de répartition de *Dynamene tubicauda* Holdich est étendue, mais cette espèce n'est toujours connue que de la Méditerranée orientale. Nous clarifions également la synonymie de *Dynamene torelliae* Holdich avec *Dynamene bicolor* (Rathke) et confirmons la présence de *Dynamene bicolor* en mer Noire. Une mise à jour et une clarification de la distribution de ce genre sont donc nécessaires. Dans cette étude, nous décrivons la distribution des espèces de Dynamene à la lumière de nouvelles observations dans l'océan Atlantique Nord-Est et ses îles associées, ainsi que dans les mers Méditerranée, Noire et Rouge, et grâce au réexamen des collections muséales et des collections personnelles de plusieurs auteurs. Sur la base de ces observations, nous étendons les limites nord et sud de D. bidentata (Adams) ; les limites ouest et sud de D. magnitorata Holdich ; Les limites nord, est et ouest de *Dynamene edwardsi* (Lucas) et les limites est et ouest de *Dynamene bifida* Torelli sont précisées. L'aire de répartition de *Dynamene tubicauda* Holdich est étendue, mais cette espèce n'est toujours connue que de la Méditerranée orientale. Nous clarifions également la synonymie de *Dynamene torelliae* Holdich avec *Dynamene bicolor* (Rathke) et confirmons la présence de *Dynamene bicolor* en mer Noire. De nouvelles cartes de répartition des six espèces de *Dynamene* sont présentées. The range of Dynamene tubicauda Holdich is extended, but is still only known from the eastern Mediterranean. We also clarify the synonymy of D. torelliae Holdich with D. bicolor (Rathke), and the occurrence of D. bicolor in the Black Sea. New distribution maps of the six Dynamene species are presented.
