<abstract>
<p>Strigolactone (
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
) mutants in diverse species show reduced stature in addition to their extensive branching. Here, we show that this dwarfism in pea (
<italic>Pisum sativum</italic>
) is not attributable to the strong branching of the mutants. The continuous supply of the synthetic
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
GR24 via the root system using hydroponics can restore internode length of the
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
-deficient
<italic>rms1</italic>
mutant but not of the
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
-response
<italic>rms4</italic>
mutant, indicating that
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
s stimulate internode elongation via
<italic>RMS4</italic>
. Cytological analysis of internode epidermal cells indicates that
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
s control cell number but not cell length, suggesting that
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
may affect stem elongation by stimulating cell division. Consequently,
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
s can repress (in axillary buds) or promote (in the stem) cell division in a tissue-dependent manner. Because gibberellins (GAs) increase internode length by affecting both cell division and cell length, we tested if
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
s stimulate internode elongation by affecting GA metabolism or signaling. Genetic analyses using
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
-deficient and GA-deficient or
<italic>DELLA</italic>
-deficient double mutants, together with molecular and physiological approaches, suggest that
<xref ref-type="def" rid="def3">SL</xref>
s act independently from GAs to stimulate internode elongation.</p>
