Abstract

Sustainable water management in Berlin is based on protection of the quality of surface water as well as groundwater. Berlin has to handle different aspects, e.g. low flow rates, high portions of advanced treated wastewater in the water cycle, and a shallow freshwater aquifer. The Berlin water supply is exclusively based on groundwater. In order to conserve the natural available groundwater, it is intensively enriched by bank filtration and artificial recharge. In addition, some sewage farms are still in function. Unlike former times, only advanced treated wastewater is used. A partly closed water cycle is a result of the usage, treatment and recycling of water in Berlin. To address the challenge of water management in Berlin the special R & D project "Natural and Artificial Systems of Recharge and Infiltration" has been launched. The main objective is to develop expertise in the overall management of water resources in terms of river and lake filtration processes and re-use of sewage water in a partial water cycle.
