Abstract

This paper presents the results of analysis of a large database of cut rock slopes with various types of displacement monitoring data. The database includes cut slopes from a variety of geological environments, with the majority of cases drawn from the mining industry. Many of the slopes in the database have exhibited tertiary (accelerating) creep leading to collapse. Analysis of the displacement records is carried out, with discussion on limits for total displacement and displacement rate. Assessment is made of the mathematical form of the tertiary creep curve and the likely factors influencing the form of tertiary creep, such as failure mechanism, rock mass strength and slope geometry. A greater understanding of the pre-collapse behaviour of a slope will enable better assessment of whether a slope is likely to reach tertiary creep and more accurate forecasts of the time-to-collapse
