Abstract

Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s movie gave life to a mythological figure that left its marks not only on the history of the motion picture industry but also on New York itself. Yet, the success of the movie was in a certain way the result of the work of Willis O’Brien, whose stop motion animation gave birth to modern special effects. Peter Jackon, who has been inspired to become a filmmaker by King Kong and by the animation of O’Brien and Harryhausen, thus realized his dream when he was given the chance to direct his own version of King Kong. However, he did not conceive his movie as a remake but as a digitalization. Jackson thus united two worlds separated by seventy years of technological progress and linked by a single passion: to film the eighth wonder of the world.
