Abstract

Was sind die grossen Tendenzen der mittel- und westeuropäischen Ordnung seit dem Mittelalter? Welche Dynastien, welche Nationen haben das Schicksal des Kontinents bis in unsere Zeit bestimmt? Welche Vorstellungen von Europa herrschten in der Neuzeit vor? Inwiefern hat der I. Weltkrieg Europa radikal verändert? Was bleibt nach 1990 von der nach dem I. Weltkrieg vor allem unter der Leitung Clemenceaus geschaffenen Neuordnung des Kontinents? Stellt der nun auch von Deutschland getragene Prozess der Europäischen Integration einen Bruch mit dem französischen Republikanismus dar... oder ist er im Grund eine Bestätigung der kühnsten republikanischen und demokratischen Träume, die noch in der 1970er Jahren nicht einmal als Utopie vorstellbar waren?

How did dynasties and nations try to shape the destiny of the continent hitherto? Which Ideas of Europe dominated the minds since the Renaissance? To what extent did WWI radically change the continent? What remains after the turn of 1989-1991 of the  territorial and political reshaping of the continent which was decided unter the influence of Clemenceau after WWI? Does the process of European Integration which is now supported by Germany represent? A rupture with the Republican tradition in France or basically a bright confirmation to the boldest republican and democratic dreams - dreams that did not even exist als Utopias in the 1970s...</abstract>
