Abstract

Since the 1970s in Northern Australia, the Yolngu have mobilized audiovisual technologies for the transmission of ritual knowledge. More than records made to salvage potentially threatened traditions, audiovisual productions give rise to new forms of mediation of religious experience. Access to these documents in community based digital archives has stimulated a significant creative activity in the ritual sphere. Many ceremonial leaders have developed a critical reflexivity on their own practices, imagining new ways to transmit their religious values on mediums such as bark painting and video. Based on a permanent renegotiation of secrecy and its transmission, the diffusion of these media generates a mode of relation to images that is interactive, non-dogmatic and conducive to multiple interpretations.
