Abstract
Editors' note: In 1980, John Ardoin was a member of the team that journeyed to Bayreuth to film the first complete performance of Wagner' Der Ring des Nibe-lungen for television. The production was that of 1976, created for the centenary of the founding of the Bayreuth Festival. It was staged by French director Patrice Ch´reau and conducted by Pierre Boulez. Mr. Ardoin wrote the documentary on this historic venture, telecast last January on PBS, as well as intermission features and the narration for Friedelind Wagner, the composer's granddaughter, who served as hostess for the cycle. The following are excerpts from a diary kept by Mr. Ardoin during this period. Part one of “A Ring Diary” appeared in the Summer 1983 issue of The Opera Quarterly.
