Abstract

It has not been the intention to cover all aspects but to consider some main trends grouped in three sections: (1) Correlation between acoustical processes (natural or simulated) and subjective listening assessments. (2) Development of measuring technique and model technique. (3) Experience with modern halls and its interpretation.From the work considered some tentative conclusions can be drawn:(1) It seems reasonable to conclude that lateral reflections are most important in creating a subjective impression of space. It has been established that a few incoherent signals may produce a very pronounced impression of (subjective) diffusion.(2) The model technique has developed to an extent where the simulation of halls (designed but not yet built) is comparatively easy to establish. The question therefore is rather what kind of criteria to measure. The technique of acoustical measurements has been greatly improved by the introduction of the pulse-integration method, and the established correlation between “Subjective Reverberation” and “Early Decay Time” motivate the adoption of this method for model testing. The question of a single criterion for acoustical judgement of music rooms cannot be said to have been resolved during the time period considered, but it can be maintained that the introduction of measurements on the “Early Decay” of the reverberation process represents an essential step forward.(3) The experience gained from concert halls inaugurated during the period considered in some instances underlines the importance of the shape of classical concert halls.
