Abstract

We report the first application of CT to naturally desiccated bodies. As has already been shown in similar investigations on Egyptian mummies, this method provides results in soft tissue representations which cannot be obtained by conventional radiological techniques. The results are restricted by the preservation conditions of the objects under investigation, where factors such as dehydration process, duration of rehydration and position of burial play a causal role. The relevance of CT is demonstrated valid for naturally preserved mummies of category I-IIa (mummy bundles and mummies with inner organs present).
