Abstract
Luminescence dating is an archaeological dating technique applicable to fired clay materials, based on the emission of light from crystalline mineral inclusions such as quartz. It was pioneered for the dating of pottery in the 1970s. Current research at the University of Durham into dating brick from standing buildings raises the possibility of precisely dating vernacular brickwork, which is hard to date stylistically, and for which more precise dates would help both the study of individual buildings and the resolution of wider questions. This article provides a non-specialist discussion of the technique and of recent developments in its application to brick, followed by an investigation into the use of luminescence to date six independently dated sixteenth-century chimneys inserted into open-hall houses in Suffolk. The results are promising, providing dates that agree with architectural, historical and dendrochronological dates, with a precision in the region of ′20-30 years: very encouraging for a preliminary study of this nature.
