Its mechanisms are not well understood, thus studies targeting cause-directed therapy or prevention are needed. This study uses the transgenic <italic>Caenorhabditis elegans</italic> PD model. We demonstrated that dietary supplementation of the worms with an extract from the cultivated red seaweed <italic>Chondrus crispus</italic> decreased the accumulation of α-synulein and protected the worms from the neuronal toxin-, 6-OHDA, induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration. These effects were associated with a corrected slowness of movement. We also showed that the enhancement of oxidative stress tolerance and an up-regulation of the stress response genes, <italic>sod-3</italic> and <italic>skn-1</italic>, may have served as the molecular mechanism for the <italic>C. crispus</italic>-extract-mediated protection against PD pathology. Altogether, apart from its potential as a functional food, the tested red seaweed, <italic>C. crispus</italic>, might find promising pharmaceutical applications for the development of potential novel anti-neurodegenerative drugs for humans.</p></div></front><back><div1 type="bibliography"><listBibl><biblStruct><analytic><author><name sortKey="Bernheimer, H" uniqKey="Bernheimer H">H. Its mechanisms are not well understood, thus studies targeting cause-directed therapy or prevention are needed. This study uses the transgenic <italic>Caenorhabditis elegans</italic> PD model. We demonstrated that dietary supplementation of the worms with an extract from the cultivated red seaweed <italic>Chondrus crispus</italic> decreased the accumulation of α-synulein and protected the worms from the neuronal toxin-, 6-OHDA, induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration. These effects were associated with a corrected slowness of movement. We also showed that the enhancement of oxidative stress tolerance and an up-regulation of the stress response genes, <italic>sod-3</italic> and <italic>skn-1</italic>, may have served as the molecular mechanism for the <italic>C. crispus</italic>-extract-mediated protection against PD pathology. Altogether, apart from its potential as a functional food, the tested red seaweed, <italic>C. crispus</italic>, might find promising pharmaceutical applications for the development of potential novel anti-neurodegenerative drugs for humans.</p></abstract><kwd-group><kwd><italic>Chondrus crispus</italic></kwd><kwd>neuroprotective effect</kwd><kwd>oxidative stress</kwd><kwd>Parkinson’s disease</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front></pmc><affiliations><list></list><tree><noCountry><name sortKey="Banskota, Arjun H" sort="Banskota, Arjun H" uniqKey="Banskota A" first="Arjun H." last="Banskota">Arjun H.
