Abstract

Choline acetyltransferase, tyrosine hydroxylase, glutamic acid decarboxylase, and acetylcholinesterase activities were measured in the combined interpeduncular nucleus and surrounding tegmentum in rats from 3 to 30 days of age. At 3 days choline acetyltransferase activity is 5% and glutamic acid decarboxylase activity is 24% of the activities at 30 days and both show significant linear correlations with age. Tyrosine hydroxylase and acetylcholinesterase at 3 days are each > 70% of the corresponding activity at 30 days and neither shows a significant linear correlation with age. Results are compared with similar data for rat neostriatum.
